Biography

I am Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Universidad de Chile.

I obtained a B.Sc. in Mathematics, a Master in Operations Research, and a Ph.D. in Business and Economics, all from RWTH Aachen, Germany. Currently I am teaching courses on statistics and data mining on the undergraduate level, data science and social networks analysis on the graduate level (Master and Ph.D.) as well as Business Intelligence and Business Analytics in Exectutive Education.  

 

After finishing my PhD in 1992, I have been invited as Visiting Professor to University of Osaka (Japan), The University of Tokyo (Japan), University of Alberta (Canada), KU Leuven (Belgium), RWTH Aachen (Germany), and University of Vienna (Austria), among others.

 

I am Associate Editor of the journal Applied Soft Computing and member of the Editorial Board of the journal Intelligent Data Analysis as well as of several professional societies (Informs, IEEE, GOR, and ICHIO). Since 2014 I am head of the Data Science group within the Institute Complex Engineering Systems and Chairman of the Program Committee of the series of conferences BAFI – Business Analytics in Finance and Industry.

 

Research Interests


My research interests are data miningdynamic data miningdata science, and social network analysis with applications to business analytics and crime analytics.
